Reflection
As time goes by, I have learned more about
the different aspects of cultures. I have known different terms about culture,
like mainstream, folk culture, high culture, subculture and counter culture. I
learned these by doing some readings. I have watched a video about 7 aspects of
culture, because of this I’ve known that culture is the collective programming
of the human mind that distinguishes the member of one group from those of
another. And it’s a system of collectively held values basically the glue that
holds society together. That opened a new door of my mind about what culture
is.
My
Aha moment was an iceberg, this iceberg is not the iceberg in the Titanic, it’s
the iceberg model of culture. We drew an
iceberg in the classroom. It clearly
showed us what we know and don’t know about the culture. The culture we have
known is like the top of the iceberg which is on the water, and that is the
formal culture. And the culture we don’t know is like the part of the iceberg
below the surface of the water, and that is the deep culture.
Then, my bumper sticker is “Culture
Shock”.
I didn’t know that what is Culture Shock,
but after I watched some videos, I’ve known that Culture Shock is a very real
experience for many people who move to another country. And there are some
different stages of Culture Shock. People will feel sadness, loneliness,
melancholy, etc. Then I realized that I am in the Cultural Shock right now.
That really opened my mind.
